A Champion By ROBYN BRISTOW Georgia Davies first stud Angus cow was a 21st present. That was 1999. Today the Blackrose Angus Stud, near Oxford, has grown to four, and among them is a sassy little yearling heifer, Gladstone Paola, who made a big name for herself at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show last week. It was the first time Georgia had shown stock from her own stud, and Gladstone Paola did not disappoint.

She won Champion Angus female, Champion Angus yearling, Supreme Champion Angus before going on to win the prestigious Junior Meat and Wool Cup the Grand Champion junior across all breeds. The stunning yearling also showed she could foot it with the best senior stock, coming in fourth overall, across all breeds in the senior Meat and Wool Cup to cap off her first foray into the ring and Georgia’s first showing on her own account. Broadband rollout to rural hospitals Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith welcomes news the rollout of high speed broadband to rural hospitals has been finished. North Canterbury would benefit directly from the milestone at the Kaikoura Hospital and Rangiora Hospital. ‘‘Highspeed broadband is going to greatly improve the quality of health services available in our rural communities. This will enable healthcare to be more efficient, more innovative and of an overall higher standard. ‘ Congestion survey The NZ Transport Agency in conjunction with the Waimakariri District Council are surveying commuters between the Waimakariri District and Christchurch as part of measures to address congestion. Transport Agency Southern Regional Director, Jim Harland says this research survey will provide a greater insight into people’s daily travel choices and their journey experiences between Waimakariri District and Christchurch City . Commuters who take part in the research will go into the draw to win prizes including one of two scenic helicopter flights over Christchurch. The online research survey, starting on Friday 20 November, will be split into four weekly parts with participants earning an entry into the draw for each part they complete. Others anticongestion measures being promoted are carpooling and parkandride schemes, the introduction of variable speed limits before the city end of the motorway and, longer term, the construction of the Western bypass and the Northern arterial route. Those who want to take part in the survey can do so at – waimakariri.govt.nz. Lost and Found The following property is reported as lost to the Rangiora police have you seen it? Iconic winery for sale By ROBYN BRISTOW An imposing winery, cellar door and vineyard, near Waipara is up for sale by private tender. Formerly known as the Mudhouse and now Waipara Hills, the property is owned by NZ Wineries Ltd which runs the winery operation at the back of the huge building and leases the cellar door and restaurant space to Australian company Accolade Wines, at the front. NZ Wineries chief executive officer Louise Miller says there is also a small

vineyard holding, which is part of the title, available as part and parcel of the sale. ‘‘There is also a vineyard, owned by a third party who is a shareholder in NZ Wineries, where the owner has indicated he may be interested in a sale if a buyer wanted a winery and a vineyard,’’ she says. Ms Miller says as part of the sale, the winery will be leased back to NZ Wineries, which has the relationship/lease with Accolade. Bayleys has listed the 14.6243 hectare property. A lease is in place until 2020 for the retail and restaurant tenant.

Georgia bought Gladstone Paola from the North Island Gladstone Angus Stud run by the Maungaraki Cattle Company, south east of Masterton in the Wairarapa. While it was the first time in the ring showing on her own account, her aim of owning her own stud and her love affair with showing began while a student at Rangiora High School. In 2009 she was one of a group of pupils who led for Phil and Kay Worthington who run Woolstone Park Lowlines at Fernside, near Rangiora. The couple have been offering the experience to young Rangiora High School students for many years to help them with

their land based studies, improve their knowledge of cattle and help them gain confidence and knowledge. After several years with Woolstone Park Lowlines, Georgia was ‘‘adopted’’ by Mark Stevens and also worked for other studs until she was able to begin to grow her own stud. ‘‘I was given a cow for my 21st birthday and my stud kind of grew from there,’’ she says. ‘‘Kay and Phil gave me a leg up into the industry and now I just love showing and if I have a success story it is even better,’’ she says. Hurunui Recycling closing down By ROBYN BRISTOW Hurunui Recycling, which has championed waste minimisation since 1990, will shut up shop on December 18 with the loss of six jobs. Heather Kinsey, chairperson of North Canterbury Community Resources (NCCR), trading as Hurunui Recycling, said this week the shareholders and directors had ‘‘reluctantly decided to cease trading’’. The business was ‘hemorrhaging’’ money since losing the transfer station and the Hurunui District Council collection contract. New income streams had not been as profitable as hoped and the Reuse store was struggling to compete with local competitors and TradeMe. Hurunui Recycling began down sizing its operation on March 31, stopping sorting and collecting waste and sorting recyclables. It put Cultivating Memories, a separate business up for sale and it has since been sold to a North Island interest. It then threw its weight behind recycling of ewaste such as old televisions, for Ecycle Ltd, which proved to be a good income source. But faced with the prospect of its council lease being up and having to find a new home, the decision has been

made to call it quits. Ms Kinsey said some of those losing their jobs had been with Hurunui Recycling for 14 to 15 years. NCCR had done everything possible to save the troubled business but unfortunately it could not find a solution. The company, which is still solvent, is to be wound up and the balance of its assets transferred to the Hurunui 3Es Trust, which had the same philosophy as Hurunui Recycling of ‘‘employment, environment and education’’. Lisa Carmichael, chairperson of the 3Es Trust said it was ‘‘sorry that Hurunui Recycling has to close’’. ‘‘We thank staff and directors there for all their efforts to keep going. ‘‘With the upcoming change in the lease arrangements, plus continuing trading losses, now is the right time to wind things up and give the Trust funds for future community initiatives.’’ Waste minimisation has been practiced in the Hurunui district for 25 years years, beginning under the umbrella of the Amberley Districts Residents’ Association which opened a recycling dropoff centre in the town’s old fire station in 1990. With an enthusiastic team of volunteers, the facility soon outgrew its premises and moved into the

council depot. It continued to expand into every available space in the depot, as volumes of waste removed from the waste stream increased. Hurunui Recycling Inc. was established as the ‘‘trading arm’’ of the Residents’ Association. It took on employees, assisted by a team of volunteers committed to recycling. Council bought extra land adjoining the Amberley Transfer Station allowing more expansion and the incorporation of an education centre and Reuse Store. Business boomed and Hurunui Recycling became a blue print for other districts, spreading its recycling message throughout the South Island as its members travelled to Australia to check out how better to improve their systems. Advocacy of waste minimisation enthusiast, Molly Anderson, saw volunteers being supported by paid workers and a formalised management structure. But what began and grew with a flurry, ended when it lost its council collection and recycling contract in recent times as the council opened a new transfer station on Grays Road and looked afresh at waste minimisation and associated costs.

Hurunui SAR win Harris Cup By AMANDA BOWES Watching the Rugby World Cup final didn’t slow down the Hurunui Land Search and Rescue Group (LandSAR) who came away with the Harris Cup in the annual SAR competition. In spite of struggling to get a four man team together on the morning, Hurunui finished the day’s challenges with a score of 86.55 just behind the Police team who won with a score of 87.51. However, Hurunui was awarded the cup as the Police team is not a LandSAR group. The competition was held at Benmore Station on the south side of Porters Pass and started with a Rogaine challenge to get everyone in the spirit of competition. Four North Canterbury teams took part Hurunui, Hanmer, Oxford One and two. Phil Purchas, from Hawarden, says the Rogaine was pretty tough, but they completed it in 2.5 hours with two minutes to spare in the allocated time. The Rogaine was one part of the navigation competition which also included a quiz at lunch time. The groups had a topographical map where they had to solve problems such as working out how long it took to get from Point A to Point B using land gradients. After lunch the search was on for a missing person in the riverbed. Judges

Magnificent obsession takes flight By SHELLEY TOPP

Gert van Kruiningen’s magnificent obsession is about to take flight. The Dutchborn software engineer, has been building a preWorld War 1 replica Bleriot X aeroplane in his spare time, and it is almost ready to have its first test flight. The Bleriot XI was designed by French aviator Louis Bleriot, and on July 25, 1909, with Monsieur Bleriot at the controls, it became the first plane to be flown across the English Channel. Gert emigrated to New Zealand in 1992 and now lives in North Canterbury, near Eyrewell Forest, with his New Zealandborn wife Nicki, and their two children. The project came to life after a conversation about the Bleriot with Nicki during a camping holiday at Okains Bay in December 2011, when it was decided Gert should build a replica Bleriot X Next, came the kit set, which arrived in Christchurch on June 8, 2012, packed

Gert’s Bleriot XI was made using a fullscale kit set. The project was chronicled initially on Gert’s Facebook pagebut now there is also a website www.bleriotxi.com and a bunch of You Tube videos, showing incredibly detailed information, plus photos and videos, about the project, including Gert’s lessons this year learning to fly at Rangiora airfield, in a ‘‘Rans S6ES Coyote II’’. ‘‘I did things the other way around,’’’ Gert says. ‘‘I started to build this beautiful plane first, and now learning to fly.’’ In New Zealand, pilots are taught to fly in microlights, which are ultralight, 2 seater, fixedwing aircraft. Before

anyone can learn to fly, budding pilots need a medical certificate to say they are fit to do so. ‘‘Basically if you can drive a car then you should be able to fly a microlight,’’ Gert says. Now the time is fast approaching where Gert’s Bleriot XI will have its first test flight. It won’t be him at the controls though. That job has to be done by an experienced test pilot. However, there is still some minor work to be done before that can happen. ‘‘I am currently working on the tachometer to measure the propeller speed. I am just waiting on the sensor a friend is making, and sewing some leather at the moment for the back of my seat. After that hopefully the test flights will start. Hopefully the first one will be before the end of the year.’’

Grant for local youth hui Hurunui district youth are looking forward to hosting a young leaders media and marketing hui next year, thanks to a Ministry of Youth Development grant. The Hurunui Youth Council last week had a $5920 grant approved in the Ministry of Youth Development’s latest funding round. Youth development officer Rochelle Faimalo says the funds will be used to organise a one day workshop next year, open to Canterbury youth councils and youth leaders, focused on social media, traditional media, marketing and promotion of youth councils and youth events. ‘‘We look forward to gaining new skills around media, marketing and

promotion to continue to grow the Hurunui Youth Programme and the Hurunui Youth council. We are also looking forward to the opportunity to host other youth councils in the Hurunui district and share the experience with them. ‘‘I think in this day and age social media is growing so much, so it’s important our young people keep up with that and that we interact with our youth in the best way possible.’’ Ms Faimalo says Hurunui youth have previously attended workshops in Ashburton and Christchurch, but decided it was their turn to host a workshop. The workshop is likely to be held in Leithfield and she expects up to 100 young people to attend.

Pupils from the Jenna McKenzie School of Dance won 16 trophies at the Christchurch Tap Dancers Teachers’ Association ballet, jazz and tap competitions in the Rangiora Town Hall earlier this month. ‘‘The girls were amazing and had great time,’’ Jenna said. ‘‘Our focus is not winning trophies but gaining performance experience. If we gain trophies it is a bonus.’’ The standard of dance in the South Island was high, and the Auckland adjudicator at the competition had remarked on this, she said. ‘‘So I am very proud of the girls. We have eight competition solo students and one team who travel to competitions around New Zealand and occasionally Australia always representing Rangiora well.’’ The school has about 250 pupils from two years to 20, of both sexes. ‘‘We teach ballet, jazz, lyrical and hip hop. I hope to begin new contemporary classes next year,’’ she said. Jenna was born in Rangiora and she has had the dance school in the town for 16 years. ‘‘I have also spent time teaching ballet in London.’’ The school puts on a recital every year with this year’s performance in the Rangiora Town Hall, called ‘‘Showcase of Dance & Second Star to the Right’’. It will be performed on Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 11.

this project together. This week a Marine study course (Curious minds) is being held for students from Kaikoura and North Canterbury at the marine laboratory. The potential to expand marine research here is also huge. On November 5, I attended the Sport Tasman volunteer breakfast in Kaikoura. Summer is getting closer, it has been good to see some rain falling that has kept things green in our area although the ground moisture levels are low. This season is shaping up to be another challenging one, although stock grow well in these conditions. The tourist season is under way here and there are plenty of international tourists visiting our town already. Some interesting statistics from a recent government report show how important international visitors are to our local economy with about 70 percent of our visitor spend coming from international visitors. Kaikoura featured high on the guest nights per head of local population by coming in third in New Zealand with Mackenzie Districts and Queenstown lakes ahead of us. This shows that many of our nations attractions are out in the regions. With an anticipated increase in Chinese tourists from 230000 in 2015 to more than one million in 2020, there is a need to continue to develop hotels throughout the country and into the regions . There are parties working on attracting hotel investment in Kaikoura, if we can get one across the line it will be a positive game changer for the whole community. During the weekend Kaikoura whalefest was launched with an outstanding display of information provided and guest speakers giving some fascinating insights into the behaviour and lifestyles of our whales. Tell Us About

Your Commute from Waimakariri to Christchurch

Stuck fast . . . Two vehicles stuck in the surf at the mouth of the Ashley River, at Waikuku PHOTO: SUPPLIED Beach last Saturday afternoon.

Tide traps SUV in surf By SHELLEY TOPP A man who drove his sports utility vehicle (SUV) down to the mouth of the Ashley River where it became stuck in the surf, with the tide coming in, is being called a ‘‘twit’’ by some Waikuku beach residents. But the owner of the truck, who did not want to be named and was in no mood to be interviewed, had much harsher words for the man who had come to help him. He yelled at Shane Stewart, of Winch U Towing Four Wheel Drive Recovery to pull him out of the water, accentuating his demands with language unfit to print in The News. The incident happened late last Saturday afternoon. The towing company was called after a second SUV, also believed to be owned by the same man, became stuck in the surf while attempting to pull out the first truck. While the second truck was successfully hauled from the surf, by Mr Stewart, the other one was too far out at sea to be retrieved with the tide coming

in. Beach residents say this is the second time a vehicle owned by the man has become stuck in the surf. Whitebaiters at the scene say the man had been warned to remove his truck from the surf because the tide was coming in. ‘‘He came roaring down the beach, and was fishing out in the waves where none of us go. ‘‘The tide’s coming in. Two people told him to move his truck,’’ said one whitebaiter. He comes down here quite a lot. The worst thing is, it has happened before to him.’’ Nothing like this had happened to any of the other whitebaiters or fishermen using the beach, he says. ‘‘He’s just going to (expletive) it up for the rest of us.’’ Environment Canterbury regional park rangers were called to the scene but did not want to comment about the incident until further details were known. However, they were clearly dismayed at the stupidity of what had happened.

Menz Shed to move Amberley Menz Shed could soon have a new home in central Amberley. The Hurunui District Council has given its approval for a Menz Shed to build behind the district library on Carters Road. The Menz Shed group is now busy fundraising to make it become a reality. Chairman Stuart Reesby says it will be 12 months or more before their new home will begin to take shape. The group already has $10,000 of the $60,000 to $70,000 needed and is applying to trusts and charities for help and fundraising through raffles and selling ‘‘bits and pieces’’ made by the group at the local A&P show and the Leithfield market. Mr Reesby says the group has great support from local businesses Basher ITM Building Centre, local plumbers and MainPower which will connect the power. Inthemeantime the group will continue to work out of a rural shed at

Broomfield while it looks for more spacious premises in the interim, to provide more space for its growing membership which now stands at 28. Menz sheds provide a venue for men, who are mostly retired, to meet for fellowship and support and to work on joint projects using tools and equipment that are pooled for use of all members, but which would not normally be available to an individual. Having a central site in the town that members can walk to or access by mobility scooter, will help its membership grow, says Mr Reesby. It is proposed to build a 180 square metre building with a workshop, kitchen, toilet facilities and a store room. It will not operate on a Saturday morning while the Toy Library, which is nearby, is open. The shed will be able to be removed if the site is needed by the council or if the council buys it if the lease is terminated.

Board vacancy filled

Wedded bliss . . . Jan and Sid Dyer, of Rangiora, are preparing to celebrate 60 years of PHOTO: SHELLEY TOPP marriage on November 26.

A former chair of the WoodendAshley Community Board, Keith Nelson, has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the board left after the resignation of Vanessa Forsyth. Vanessa was elected to the Board in May 2014 as a result of a byelection to replace leaving board member, Mike Northmore. However, she has taken up an opportunity to work in Australia where she and her family will live for the foreseeable future. Vanessa’s work while on the board reflected her interest in working with youth in the community. She was also appointed as the board’s representative to the Woodend Community Association, the Woodend Community Centre Advisory Group and the Christchurch

International Airport Liaison Group. With less than 12 months to the local body elections in October 2016 and no legal requirement to fill the vacancy by a byelection, it was decided to appoint Mr Nelson. Keith was a member of the Woodend Ashley Community Board during the 20102013 term and missed out at the last local body elections. He brings an understanding of how the Community Board operates, a familiarity with many of the ward issues and, as a resident of Sefton, representation on the board from that part of the ward. The board will work and advocate for the WoodendAshley ward in its final year before a new look KaiapoiWoodend ward at the elections.

A short walk to a lifetime of happiness By SHELLEY TOPP It was only a short walk from one end of the Clarkville Hall to the other, but one Sid and Jan Dyer will never forget. That was the night Sid put his hand out to ‘‘the most beautiful girl in the room’’ and asked her to dance. Janette Giles, as Jan was known then, took his hand and together they danced the night away. Now the Rangiora husband and wife are preparing to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary. ‘‘I think she thought I was someone else,’’ Sid teases. ‘‘He danced divinely,’’ says Jan. It was back in the day, during the 1950s, when Saturdaynight dances at small town halls were the hot ticket for finding romance in North Canterbury. The boys stood at one end of the hall ‘‘eyeing the girls, and all smoking’’, while the girls sat all around the hall waiting for an invitation to dance. ‘‘If someone caught your eye, and you were keen, you stood up and got over there quickly,’’ Sid says. The night they first met brings back happy memories for Sid and Jan, who will celebrate 60 years of wedded bliss on November 26. They got married in the Kaiapoi Methodist Church, on a scorching hot, nor’wester day. The ceremony was attended by 80 guests. Jan made her own wedding gown, and carried a bouquet of roses and carnations. The bridal party travelled to the church in two shiny Vanguards, and the wedding cake was made by Jan’s mother, Marie Giles. Their special day even made newspaper headlines when a huge fire broke out in the Balmoral Forest at

Hawarden. 2991 hectares of forest was burnt in the blaze. Jan says she and her father, Vic Giles, could see the smoke on their way to the church, but didn’t know what it was at the time. Their shortened honeymoon, in a borrowed caravan at Timaru’s Selwyn Motor Camp, also had some unexpected moments. The caravan had a leaky roof which dripped water on to their bed. So the newlyweds packed up early and returned to their new home, a little house on East Belt, in Rangiora. They settled down and eventually ran a garage in Rangiora’s High Street for many years. Their business, Herons Motors 1976 Limited was situated on the site where the AMI Insurance building now stands. Their honeymoon experience hasn’t put the couple off caravans, and they now have one of their own. The couple have many other interests in common, including sport. They both love golf and have six holeinones between them. Jan says the secret to a happy marriage is never going to bed on an argument, advice given to her by her mother. ‘‘I’m a lucky girl,’’ she says to Sid. ‘‘You have been a great husband and father.’’ Together they have had three children, Gayle, Peter and Jeffrey, and now have 7 grandchildren. All the family, with the exception of Peter will be home for belated anniversary celebrations at Christmas. Peter died unexpectedly, from hypertensive heart disease, on December 19, 2009, Jan’s birthday. ‘‘It was very sad for us all,’’ they say. He was only 51.

Waimakariri Water Zone Committee

Does water quality matter to you? Whether you drink, wash, swim, fish, or irrigate – water quality affects everyone The Waimakariri Water Zone Committee invites you to get involved in local water management by attending one of five community meetings around the district. The community meetings will provide an update on the water management planning process (as part of the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan) that will begin for the Waimakariri District in 2016. Having a ball . . . Idea Services clients are excited about a ‘‘mixed abilities variety concert’’ PHOTO: DAVID HILL to be held at the Rangiora Town Hall later this month.

Variety concert in Rga By DAVID HILL A ‘‘mixed abilities variety concert’’ is set to take Rangiora by storm. ‘‘Both Sides of Our World’’, which features performers from IHC North Canterbury, will be performed at the Rangiora Town Hall on Saturday, November 28, from 2pm. IHC North Canterbury chairwoman Kay Pearce says the performers, who are part of the Idea (intellectual disability empowerment in action) Services programme, have been receiving professional tuition at the Dale Hartley School of Speech and Drama (DHSSD) in anticipation of the concert. ‘‘This all started two years ago. We did a ‘Stars in their Eyes’ concert and they just blew us away. It gave us quite an amazing insight into these people. They have to overcome such a lot to be able to perform on stage and for many of them, it’s a new experience being on stage.’’

After the success of that first concert, held at the Rangiora Baptist Church two years ago, Idea Services ‘‘decided to raise the benchmark’’, Mrs Pearce says. Supported by funding from Creative Communities Waimakariri, the performers have been practicing scenes with DHSSD for more than a year under the guidance of show director Tegan Patrick. Other performers on the day will include the Rangiora Community Choir, DHSSD soloists and dance group Defy. ‘‘The concert is a vehicle for our people to shine and by having other groups involved, it’s an opportunity for us to show that we are part of the community,’’ Mrs Pearce says. ‘‘Both Sides of Our World’’ will be performed at the Rangiora Town Hall on Saturday, November 28, from 2pm. Tickets are $16.50 and can be purchased from the Rangiora Town Hall or online at www.townhallcinemas.co.nz.

This process will help establish the community’s water management priorities and determine how to protect and maintain local water quality. The plan will affect everyone and this is your chance to be involved early in discussions. The meetings are also a chance for property owners to ask questions around nutrient management, irrigation, and farm environment plans.

A carnival is being held in Amberley to herald new beginnings for the swimming fraternity. The doors of the Amberley pool will open for the its penultimate season on November 21 and it is planned to celebrate in style. November 21 marks the beginning of the long road to the end for the pool which opens this season with a fundraising effort to help fund its replacement. ‘‘All carnival proceeds will be added to the pot in an effort to gain the money needed to build a heated, all year round, 25m pool from which the whole community will benefit. ‘‘The plans will be available to view at the opening carnival,’’ says fundraising executive Helen DouglasWithers. Starting at 12.30pm locals are invited to join in the carnival atmosphere at the pool to enjoy

an afternoon of fun in the water. There will be pool toys including a slippery pole and a new mat sausage sizzles, Kevin Frewer singing and playing music and much more. Helen says the carnival opening is an opportunity for the community to get in behind fundraising for a new pool and help make a difference. Every little bit helps, says Helen. ‘‘Even just $2.50. It all adds up,’’ she says. Swim prices will remain the same at the pool this season only $2.50 for children and $3.50 for adults, with concession cards and season tickets also available at a great price. The Save Our Pool committee is also hosting a ‘Swim the Cook Strait’ fundraiser in late February. The 22.5kms will be swum in the pool by anyone brave enough, under the watchful eye of their sponsors. To be involved in this event contact Helen at fundraising@saveourpool.org.nz. and keep an eye on its Facebook page.

Classrooms to open Kaikoura Primary School is a step closer to opening its new classrooms. Principal Bruce Pagan says the new mobile transportable buildings, which were transported to the school on trucks back in August, were blessed recently and are due to be officially opened on December 8. ‘‘We are quite excited about it. The development phase has been building for 18 months and we are just keen to get in and get on with the job.’’ At the recent blessing, Kaikoura Primary School students were joined by Hapuku School students and members of the local Runanga for prayers and singing karakia. The students and visitors walked through the new buildings, touching the walls ‘‘to put their energy and life into the buildings’’, Mr Pagan says. ‘‘The classrooms are almost ready to use we are just waiting for some essential landscaping to be completed. We are hoping to move in by the end of

the month but whatever happens, we will be going ahead with our official opening on December 8.’’ Mr Pagan says the new relocatable classrooms, which replace the school’s main classroom block of four classrooms for the school’s 80 students, is an ‘‘environmentally sound space’’, fully insulated, with doubleglazed windows and has the latest mod cons. The school’s library and administration block has also been renovated ‘‘which has given new life to the school’’. The next stage in the 60yearold school’s $1.5 million redevelopment will be the refurbishment of the hall and performing arts centre, with the negotiations between the Board of Trustees and the Ministry of Education already under way. The old classroom block is also expected to be removed next year, to leave space for new buildings should the school roll grow in the future.

Boer goat breeders win By DAVID HILL There may be few of them, but an Amberley couple were thrilled to win supreme champion with a red Boer goat. Brian and Philippa Loughhead won supreme champion red Boer goat at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show last week with a 12monthold doe. ‘‘There’s not many red Boer goat breeders in New Zealand and it’s not a colour which automatically comes out in them, so it’s a challenge, which is why we like breeding it,’’ Mr Loughhead says. ‘‘We are trying to expand the genetics, but it’s very limited in New Zealand. There’s a lot of genetics around for the traditionals.’’ The Loughheads breed both red Boer and traditional or standard Boer goats at the Amberfield stud near Amberley and run around 20 red and 50 standard Boer goats. Mr Loughhead says Boer goats are bred for the meat and the couple is striving to produce an animal which meets the breed standards and is ‘‘structurally correct’’. ‘‘They are easy to handle, but you’ve got to make sure they’re fed well in good pastures, especially in droughts,’’ Mrs Loughhead says.

The standard Boer

classes were dominated by Oamaru breeder Owen Booth, who won the supreme champion ribbon for the fourth year in row, this year with a twomonth old buck, which was the son of the buck which had won the previous two years. ‘‘You’re always breeding to improve, so the ultimate is to try and breed better than what you’ve got. So this is very pleasing,’’ Mr Booth says.

Artists take stand against slavery in new exhibition Arts in Oxford is supporting victims of slavery. The gallery is hosting a three week exhibition from Saturday, November 21, to raise money for Hagar International, a charitable organisation that works to rehabilitate victims of human trafficking, which is the fastest growing crime on earth, organiser Janie Porter says. ‘‘The exhibition will bring together works by painters, sculptors, wood and ceramic artists from around the South Island.’’ The exhibition is being organised by Artists Against Slavery, a Christchurchbased organisation run by Janie and her husband Dereck Porter, which supports Hagar in its efforts to care for women and children who have been trafficked or severely abused in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Afghanistan. Artists Against Slavery was begun in 2008 after the Porters were inspired by their travels to Southeast Asia and saw first hand the work Hagar is doing to support the victims of human trafficking. ‘‘Arts in Oxford is supporting Artists Against Slavery to raise funds to help stop this horrific crime that is happening around the world. We welcome people to the exhibition to see some wonderful artwork by great artists and also learn about human trafficking,’’ Janie says. The artwork will be open themed

Camp’s environmental practices recognised ‘‘With this in mind, the new managers felt it was essential that they lead by example and they are creating a site that is fully sustainable. Beyond this, they also educate all visitors in lessons that can be applied at home, work or school.’’ The 2015 overall Champion was the Korean Environmental Industry & Technology Institute for their green shopping ‘‘credit card’’ which encourages ecofriendly purchasing through a point scheme. Money raised through the card goes to research and development of new ‘‘green’’ technologies which the government contributes $20 million to per annum. Other New Zealand 2015 winners include: Yealands Wines, Ideal Cup for their reusable coffee cups and Able Tasman National Park for its project Janzsoon which is bringing back ‘‘birdsong’’ to the park.

LOOKING FOR A QUALITY BUILD? By ROBYN BRISTOW A forest camp in the Hanmer Springs alpine village has come up trumps for its environmental practices. The Hanmer Springs Forest Camp Trust has won a Silver Award at the International Green Apple Awards in London for its ‘‘Environmental Best Practice’’. The Award was announced at Parliament House, London, on Tuesday evening. It follows the Camp gaining a Bronze trophy at the New Zealand section of the Green Apple World Environment Awards held at the Novotel Hotel, in Christchurch last month. Its winning project was

entitled ‘‘Sustainable future’. This qualified the camp, managed by Selwyn and Elizabeth Meaclem, to go forward to the International Awards. Forest Camp representatives were invited to attend at London, but unfortunately noone could make the journey to represent the Hanmer Springs Forest Camp Trust. Recognition of the Camp’s environmental practices began when it was invited to place a submission detailing the work it had achieved in sustainability at the camp using a number of initiatives to reduce waste. These included composting all food scraps, reducing reliance on fossil fuel energy and water conservation.

The Bronze award was presented by The Green Organisation’s Chief Executive Roger Wolens and Tony Hoksbergen and General Manager of Yealands Wines, last year’s International Champion winner in Christchurch. The Green Organisation, based in London, was established in 1994 as an international, independent, nonprofit, nonpolitical, nonactivist environment group, dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world. Mr Wolens said the Hanmer Springs Forest Camp existed to educate children, schools, groups and families on the importance of proper sustainable management of the park.

Look out for Chilean grass Environment Canterbury is urging all Cantabrians in rural areas to be on the lookout for Chilean needle grass this spring and summer. Principal resource management biosecurity advisor Laurence Smith says November and December is the best

time to spot the plant pest. ‘‘At this time of the year Chilean needle grass will be left ungrazed by stock and its purple seed heads will be standing out among other pasture,’’ he said. Chilean needle grass currently infests 350 hectares on 14 properties in North Canterbury. However, more than half of Canterbury is climatically suitable for its growth. ‘‘Chilean needle grass is moved by seeds attaching to stock, vehicles and machinery, clothing and footwear and being dislodged in a new location, or entrained in contaminated feed or seed,’’ Mr Smith said. If you think you have found Chilean needle grass, contact Environment Canterbury on 0800 324636 immediately. Southdown sheep meat a big winner Southdown sheep dominated the all breed meat classes at last week’s Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show. Not only did a Southdown claim the supreme champion meat sheep ribbon, but North Canterbury farmers Dave Gillespie, of Oxford, and Fi and Phil Williams, of Omihi, near Waipara, enjoyed success with their sixtooth Southdown ram. The ram won champion Southdown ram, best carcass meat breed sheep and reserve champion Southdown to the supreme champion meat sheep, which went to a Southdown ewe, with triplet lambs in tow, bred by father and daughter Ian and Christina Jordan, of Blenheim. The champion Southdown ram and ewe also combined to win grand champion all breeds meat sheep pair ribbon. ‘‘The Southdowns won every all breeds prize except the ewe hogget, so it’s a great result for the breed,’’ Mr Gillespie says. For the Jordans, it was their fifth supreme champion meat breed ribbon in six years.

‘‘I feel very humble. It’s very exciting, especially for the breed which has been doing so well in the all breeds,’’ Ms Jordan says. ‘‘We’ve had a phenomenal run, but it’s about trying to keep the Southdown flying high. Mr Williams said the champion ram was jointly purchased from the Jordans at the 2013 Canterbury Ram Fair for $16,000, which equalled the record price paid for a Southdown in New Zealand. Last week’s success followed hot on the heels of Mr and Mrs Williams winning bragging rights in the hoof 2 hotplate class at the Amberley A&P Show recently with a Southdown lamb. Southdown rams are bred as terminal sires and Ms Jordan says it is the overall meat quality and structural soundness which sees the breed stand out above the rest. ‘‘For a terminal sire, it’s about producing early maturing lambs and the ease of lambing for hogget matings.’’ Mr Gillespie says the champion ram’s first progeny will be going under the hammer at an onfarm sale on his property on January 15.

‘Persian lambs’ used to dry conditions sometimes comes out in other African breeds. Because of the very small size, there are few flocks around. However, breeders in Australia have established a similar miniature breed of sheep, which is produced for niche markets. Damara sheep originated in Namibia, near South Africa, ‘‘where extreme conditions are the norm’’. The breed has a short, shiny, multicoloured hairy coat and a fat tail. Rams have open spiral horns and the ewes are usually polled. Up to 60% of the diet can be vegetation and they can live in areas more suited to goats.

By DAVID HILL An Oxford shearer believes he has found the ideal sheep for North Canterbury’s dry summers. Tony Stuart says karakul sheep, also known as Persian lambs, were bred to survive in the Middle East desert. He keeps them and other rare breeds on a lifestyle block near Oxford and had two karakul rams at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show last week as part of the rare breeds display. ‘‘If we come to a drought, everything else will go, but they (karakul sheep) will thrive in a dry North Canterbury summer. ‘‘Where they come from, they actually lock them up at night to stop wolves and foxes getting into them. But they have adapted to being in New Zealand conditions where there is more pasture for them and because they’re used to being around people they’re very tame.’’ Mr Stuart’s karakul sheep were previously bred by retired Banks Peninsula lifestyle farmer Lorne Kuehn, who acquired them after they arrived in New Zealand in the 1990s, and he now has one of the largest karakul sheep flocks in New Zealand, with around 50 ewes. Mr Kuehn says the karakul were prone to footrot when they first arrived, due to the comparatively softer and wetter New Zealand conditions. He crossed them with other sheep breeds to gradually breed footrot out of them. Mr Stuart is also crossing the karakul

The ‘‘fattailed’’ karakul is known for the high grade pelt from unborn and newborn lambs which are used in high quality garments, while the hairy coat of older animals is used in the production of Persian carpets. However, Mr Stuart and Mr Kuehn are quick to point out that no New Zealand breeders are interested in breeding karakul for the lamb pelt. The karakul meat is also known for being very lean, while the ewes produce

Awassi sheep also originate from the Middle East and were introduced into New Zealand in the early 1990s. Amberley rider wins

Netballers take on Australians By AMANDA BOWES Eight North Canterbury women had a blast at the Golden Oldies Netball Festival in Perth recently. Two were from Rotherham, two from Hawarden, one ex Hawarden and three from Waikari. There were 500 players, 35 years and over, taking part with teams from Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Fiji and Vanuatu for a week of netball, parties and fun. The Luscious Hotshots team, comprising of Judith Hawker, Shirley Topp, Erin Mulholland, Lynda Crichton, Nick Lang, Coreen Fletcher, Jenny Keeble and Michelle Fletcher played mainly against the Australian teams in B Grade. The teams had a parade through the streets in Hobart, had an opening party with a Casino Royale theme, three days of playing netball, a day out at the

Melbourne Cup and a closing party with an H theme. The games were competitive as well as social, giving everyone an opportunity to take part in the sort of game they wanted to play. As the golden oldies festivals are about fun and friendship, no scores are published and there isn’t an overall winner. The Golden Oldies sporting movement also covers sports other than netball. Hockey, cricket, football, softball, rugby and golf are also catered for and each discipline has its own festival. It is a way people can keep playing their favourite sport after the age of 35 and provides an environment to play without the stress of serious competition. There are 50,000 grass root members and International and National Representatives oversee developments. The next Golden Oldies Netball Festival will be held in Christchurch in 2018.

Amberley’s Giles Gormack has added the Ataahua Brigadier Trophy to his trophy haul this season, winning the threestar on debut at the FEI South Island One Day Eventing Championships in Christchurch at the weekend. Backing up from his South Island threeday eventing twostar title in May, Mr Gormack stepped up to threestar beating home a small field aboard the 11yearold Littorio gelding, Lucero. Reduced to just the two starters today after Emily Cammock, of West Melton, was forced to withdraw overnight leader Shaw Lee, Lucero ate up the big John Carmichaeldesigned track coming home clear with just 16.8 time penalties to finish on a total score of 104.5 penalties, ahead of Ms Cammock on her other ride Lewis with 119.5. Mr Gormack was absolutely thrilled with the result after a less than perfect preparation. ‘‘He was very fresh in the dressage, but redeemed himself today.’’ As expected, the twostar event was a much tighter affair, with less than 10 penalties separating the entire class heading into the cross country phase. The day belonged to 16yearold St Margaret’s College student Maria van Kuijk, of Kaiapoi, on the 16yearold Antara Whiskey Mac, who put in a huge effort across country to finish with the fastest time of the day, adding just 2.4

Safety first at bowling club Safety has been improved at the Woodend Bowling Club, thanks to community support. The club has purchased a new AED defibrillator and has received a donation of new bowling mats. Club member Alan Pegley says the purchase of the defibrillator, which will be housed in the clubrooms, was made possible thanks to funds raised in the club’s recent Bookarama and a generous donation from the Woodend Lions. Woodend Lions president David Marks says his organisation is thrilled to support the initiative. ‘‘It has been a pleasure as a principal sponsor, to present this defibrillator to the bowling club. It is an invaluable asset on any sporting compound. New defibrillator . . .
